The George Ingham Plaza Project: Decades of Influence in the Electrical Industry 1936 ~ 2016

George Ingham was a man of many passions and talents. He thrived in multiple areas, including skiing, golf, motorcross, and chess. He was a member of the Vancouver Sea Cadets and a Sea Scout; he even sailed out of the Vancouver Harbour aboard the schooner “Ramona” as a crew member. George was an adventurer, a thrill seeker, and a family man. With his wife Kathy and three sons, there was always something compelling happening in George Ingham’s life.

One of George’s greatest passions was his love for the electrical trade, which he shared with one of his sons, an electrician of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 213. George served a four-year apprenticeship as an IBEW electrician, and at the young age of 20, he became the youngest qualified journeyperson in Canada.

George worked for Mott Electric in the 1950s and ’60s and was named the Vice President of Mott Electric in 1967. After he formed United Power Ltd., he sat on the Electrical Joint Training Committee’s (EJTC) Board of Directors for 25 years. He was inducted into the Electrical Contractor’s Association of British Columbia (ECABC) Hall of Fame in 2012. George was the first to grasp onto LNG-powered vehicles. He jumped into the solar side of the market and was instrumental in the U.S. putting photovoltaic panels on many union halls and training facilities.

Throughout his life, George obtained many incredible achievements, such as:

  • The Design Award from the National Illuminating Engineering Society – Applied Lighting Competition
  • Co-author and publisher of “A Power for the World – Solar Photovoltaics Revolution.”

Adding to his incredible resume, George was the Director of:

  • Amalgamated Construction Association of BC
  • BC Construction Association
  • Electrical Contractors Association of B.C.
  • Counsel – Construction Labour Relations
  • Board member – Electrical Safety Advisory Committee
  • Member – Apprenticeship Trade Advisory Committee
  • Member/chairman total 15 years for JATC
  • President – ECA Renewable Energy Association
  • Counsel member – Mechanical Contractors Association
  • President of the natural gas for vehicle association of B.C.
  • President, CEO – United Power Ltd. 1998
  • Director of Sunology International Inc.

Not only did George leave an imprint at Mott Electric and United Power (which he founded), but he was also an integral and proud member of the ECABC – Vancouver Chapter and the EJTC.

George was a true leader and influencer in B.C.’s electrical industry. He was a man ahead of his time and a passionate solar industry pioneer. We look forward to carrying on his passion, curiosity, and drive in the photovoltaic industry as we strive to uphold the values and vision that George instilled in our organization. His commitment to sustainability and innovation has left an indelible mark on the electrical industry, and we are dedicated to building upon his legacy by continuing to push boundaries and embrace advancements in solar technology. Through our ongoing efforts in the electrical industry, we honor George’s memory and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
